What cookies are

Cookies are small files a website saves in your browser. Sites can also save information in your browser's local storage, which works in a similar way. This page covers both, and calls them all cookies.

We sort them into two groups: essential cookies, which the site needs and which are always on, and analytics cookies, which we only use if you say yes.

Essential cookies

These are stored in your browser's local storage, never sent to us or anyone else, and stay until you clear your browser data.

NameWhat it's forHow long
themeRemembers whether you picked the light or dark theme.Until you clear it
stcm.hasConsentedRemembers that you've answered the cookie banner, so we don't ask again on every page.Until you clear it
stcm.consent.essentialRecords that essential cookies are on (they always are).Until you clear it
stcm.consent.analyticsRemembers whether you accepted analytics cookies.Until you clear it

Analytics cookies

These help us see how people use the site (which pages they visit, where they click and how far they scroll), so we can make it better. They're only set if you accept analytics cookies.

NameProvider and purposeHow long
_gaGoogle Analytics: tells visitors apart.2 years
_ga_KN57WDKWC7Google Analytics: keeps track of your visit.2 years
_clckMicrosoft Clarity: tells visitors apart.1 year
_clskMicrosoft Clarity: joins the pages you visit into one session.1 day

If you don't accept, these cookies aren't set and Clarity doesn't load. Google Analytics may still receive basic, cookieless signals (such as a page view) that can't be linked to you.

For more detail, see how Google uses cookies (opens in a new tab) and the Microsoft privacy statement (opens in a new tab).

Other websites

Our shop links to Amazon. We don't set any cookies when you click those links, but Amazon sets its own once you're on its site, including one that tells Amazon you came from us. Amazon's cookie notice explains them.

Changing your mind

You can change your choice at any time with the "Change cookie settings" button at the top of this page. Every page links here from the Cookies link in its footer. If you withdraw consent, the page reloads without the analytics scripts.

You can also block or delete cookies in your browser's settings. The Information Commissioner's Office (opens in a new tab) explains how.
