Graphics Officer

My role

12 (Force Support) Engineer Group

12 (FS) Engr Gp is responsible for the essential engineer works of a Deployed Operating Base.

My responsibilities as Graphics Officer were to offer full graphics support to the senior officers at the headquarters. My graphics duties included adjusting technical drawings for temporary runways, maintenance of the Group's digital photo library, presentation suite and design of the Group's website. I also produced posters and seating plans for official dinners for the Commander.

Web Design & Photo Library

With no previous experience of web design, I was tasked with redeveloping the Group's pages on the British Army website. The page was simple looking back now, but it was a challenge at the time. The layout has not changed since that time.

Technical Drawings

The Engineer Group produced technical drawings for temporary runways. These aluminium surfaces interlocked together and could be rolled up for storage. If small modifications to the designs were required for a particular deployment, these would come to my design office.

Graphic Design

The Engineers frequently held dinner parties in the Officers' and Sergeants' Mess. Traditionally, they required seating plans, often based on rank. This also included place names. If your place name was missing from your seat, it was likely that you'd be called out by the speaker to give a speech or buy the round. Duplicate place names were often produced.

During my time as a civilian Graphics Officer for the army, the group has changed names multiple times. Originally called "12 (Air Support) Engineer Brigade". Then, "12 (Air Support) Engineer Group", And now, "12 (Force Support) Engineer Group".
